Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Practice of various "micro" reading skills: reading for gist (general meaning) or skimming, searching for specific information or scanning, guessing unknown vocabulary, understanding "hidden" or implied meaning, summarising and paraphrasing parts of a text, and responding to those text through discussion and writing.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be three elements of assessment:
1) Satisfactory completion of homework tasks, including being able to demonstrate regular "extensive" reading (reading of longer texts such as novels, plays, newspapers or journal articles) outside class.
2)A mid-term assessment of reading comprehension and text-production (summarising) skills
3) An assessment of reading comprehension, analysis and text-production (summarising and commenting) skills at the end of the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To enable students to increasing their reading efficiency (both speed and comprehension), through analysing patterns in texts, identifying signposting language, building vocabulary through regular reading in class and out of class.

Examination topics

Students will approach written texts in a variety of ways. Apart from practicing and demonstrating comprehension through answering "comprehension questions", students will also be expected to summarise and present written texts they have found, relate different texts to each other, identify style and register.
