KD-03: Learning objectives and competences: Students are aware of role concepts
and are able to choose the appropriate approach for their respective purpose.
They are able to make professional ethical decisions and are familiar with mental hygiene strategies.
DD-01: Learning objectives and skills:
critically reflect on their own role against the background of various constellations
and to recognise the associated interpreting-related challenges and to develop
and identify appropriate strategies for action. In addition, they are familiar with
possible measures for dealing with work-related stress.
The contents include: Basics of role theory and professional ethics; Coping strategies;CONTENT:
- Students should gain an overview of the different settings in which
interpreters work.
Students should familiarise themselves with different working conditions and role requirements (conference interpreting, community
interpreting, court interpreting etc.).
- Critically analyse and reflect on different role concepts, taking into account
socio-political realities and context-related conditions
- Awareness-raising with regard to professional ethical dilemmas
- Critical examination of the concept of professionalism
- Developing an awareness of power relations and hierarchies in
interpreting situations, against the background of overall societal
power relationsMETHOD:
- Input from the course teacher, based on relevant translation studies literature
educational films and relevant material from practice (professional codes of conduct,
relevant statements from professional organisations etc.)
- Group discussions aimed at developing role concepts and
to critically scrutinise predetermined role concepts, to combine the theoretical and practical
and gain clarity about their own interpreting experience and professionalperspectives.
- Mental hygiene: relevant literature (also from the field of psychotherapy, keyword:
Supervision) and exchange of experiences in the group
- Homework exercises: Reading texts on translation studies and other relevant literature
- If necessary, role plays to illustrate role concepts and make them tangible
