Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Analysis of the structure and content of several types of short academic essay, and other types of written text, concentrating on the cohesive devices and vocabulary used, particularly with regard to comparison and contrast, cause and effect, discussion and situation-problem-solution-evaluation structures. Practice at producing these structures in different types and lengths of written text.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be three types of assessment:
1) Satisfactory completion of homework tasks.
2) A short "take-home" writing task in the second half of the semester. Students will be given the general topic of the task and the text type to be produced the week before the assessment, so they can prepare ideas, opinions and vocabulary. They will complete the actual assignment as a short "unseen" writing task in class the following week.
3) An "unseen" writing task in the final week of the course. From a list of 3 or 4 titles, students will write a short text in class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To enable students, through improving their own written competence, to analyse and understand written texts in English.

Examination topics

Different model texts will be presented and analysed. Students will be expected to produce some short texts (one or two paragraphs) in class from time to time, and will be expected to produce short written texts as homework every three or four weeks.
