Continuous assessment of course work
Labels
This VO/UE course will concentrate on the varieties of written discourse in English that students will encounter. While not a "textual analysis" course, per se, it will focus on key linguistic and structural features of texts which enable communicative effectiveness and which students should aim to incorporate into their own language.

Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Different types of texts will be examined, including narrative texts (news reports, descriptions of historical events, fictional narrative), texts showing diverse levels of formality (academic introductions, emails to friends, police reports), texts showing conditionality (speculative fiction, stage plays, accounts of historical negotiations), and unusual or functional texts (instructions, jokes, etc).
Assessment and permitted materials
There will be a mid-term assessment (in the first half of May) and a final assessment, in which students will be expected to show a good degree of competence in their own writing. Success on the course will also be contingent on satisfactory completion of homework and in-class tasks.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of the course is to foster an appreciation of the structure and functionality of different texts, and to encourage students to use these forms and structures in their own writing.
Examination topics
The course will be taught exclusively in English, using a variety of English texts, to which students will be encouraged to respond, in a variety of ways.
