Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Introduction to basic aspects of translation and text production of general texts; text and assignment analysis (purpose, target group, cultural context, etc.) for translation and text production. Emphasis will be placed on text production in English (US).
Assessment and permitted materials
In-class participation (10%), homework (30%), mid-term exam (30%) and final exam (30%). Mandatory attendance with a maximum of two absences. Additional absences will result in a failing grade. For the exams students will be permitted to use bilingual and monolingual dictionaries. Use of the Internet will be permitted for the mid-term exam.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will acquire basic strategic and analytical competences necessary for successful translation and learn functional assignment-focused approaches to text production; improvement of text comprehension and text production skills; students will be required to analyze their work and their working methods.
Examination topics
Oral and written exercises to be completed in class and as homework; priority will be given to the production of English texts based on German source texts. The class assignments will be prepared individually and in teams.
