Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Getting started in consecutive interpretation (German-English, English-German) after successful completion of "Basiskompetenz Dolmetschen". Situations will be practice-oriented (speeches, guided tours, negotiations, interviews, press conferences etc. dealing with various political, economic and other issues, possibly of a topical nature). Time permitting, we will also look at whispered interpretation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Ongoing checks of progress

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will start practising consecutive interpretation in various contexts. Some work will be text-based, some in the form of role play ("mock negotiations"). Knowledge of note-taking techniques is indispensable.

Examination topics

Students will acquire and enhance their interpreting skills, familiarise themselves with various situations and contexts in which interpretation is needed, learn to further increase their word power and develop strategies required for preparation. They will seek to deepen their skills as "bilingual messengers between cultures" in oral communication. If possible, one excursion per semester will be organised.
