This course will be a hybrid course with in-person classes and online exercises. In-person classes will be streamed. Should in-person classes not be possible due to Covid-19, video conferencing will be used instead.

Aims, contents and method of the course

AIMS
- You will improve and expand on your language and translation competences
- You will acquire an overview of the skills and competences necessary for the different tracks in the MA to enable you to choose a track

CONTENTS
- Acquiring and improving fundamentals of translating and interpreting
- Translation strategies
- Register and style
- Cultural aspects, concepts and expectations
- General and specialist knowledge
- Research competence
- Tools

METHOD
Each skill will be introduced with some theoretical background and then practised with written and oral texts, developing translation and interpreting strategies together and doing a variety of exercises to address specific issues.
We will also talk about the realities of the work of translators and interpreters and new technologies to provide orientation for your career choice.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance and participation in class is required (you may miss up to 2 classes with good reason)

1 translation test E-D (30%)
1 translation test D-E (30%)
Interpreting exercises (20%)
Completed assignments & active participation in class (20%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Excellent command of both working languages
- Understanding of the theory discussed in class
- Ability to apply the strategies and solutions developed and discussed in class to new texts and situations
- Ability to adequately apply and implement the knowledge and skills acquired in class

Examination topics

You are expected to be able to apply the theory and practical translation and interpreting examples and solutions discussed in class to new texts and situations. Your written and oral work should show that you have developed an efficient way of approaching new assignments, topics and genres.
