Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to study the context of text and culture, to assess their interconnectedness, to establish how culture permeates discourse, and forms narration within a culture. It provides an overview on the history and culture of the English-speaking world to assess, in a second step, the phenomenon of collective identity against this background in selected literature.
The focus of this course is on "Britain, Empire and Aftermath".

Assessment and permitted materials

written exam at the end of the semester - classic pen-and-paper exam (no electronic devices allowed)

If you'd like to earn extra credit, you may collect a quote off the wall during our first meeting. You'd then discuss this quote on the Moodle forum. You would earn up to 10 points for this exercise. The maximum score for the exam is 100 points, which means in turn that you may score 10% of your final grade with this bonus task. You'd be required to upload your discussion onto Moodle no later than 1 May, 2024.
If you miss the first meeting, you may write to me and ask for a quote (antonina.lakner@univie.ac.at).
