Aims, contents and method of the course
Introduction to narrative theory and stylistics against the background of (literary) translation. Students will learn to analyze literary texts from narratological and stylistic perspectives and learn how this is relevant for the translation of literary texts. Lecture with discussions.
Assessment and permitted materials
For MA Translation (2024) students: part of written module exam (Module LM-01), no semester exam.
For all other students: written semester exam.In both cases, the exam will include the narratological and stylistic analysis of (a passage from) a German narrative text and reflections on potential challenges for translators.For both exams: no aids allowed.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Assessment of content and form based on five-level grading scale.Grading scale:
“very good” (1): all content-related and formal criteria are fully met
“good” (2): content-related and formal criteria are largely fulfilled, with a few minor shortcomings
“satisfactory” (3): some content-related and/or formal criteria are not fulfilled, but, on the whole, the analysis is coherent and meaningful
“sufficient” (4): some content-related and/or formal criteria are not fulfilled, which significantly impacts the overall result
“not sufficient” (5): some content-related and/or formal criteria are not fulfilled and the analysis is insufficient on several levels
