Aims, contents and method of the course

The competences acquired along the BA "Transkulturelle Kommunikation" - including the language competences - will be fostered. This course provides also an introduction to all these competences for those students who do not hold a BA degree from the ZTW. The course will, furthermore, give an orientation for the subject fields "Specialized Translation and Language Industry" and "Translation in Literature- Media - the Arts".

First, the EMT Competence Framework 2022 will be used to assess the students’ current status. This will be followed by an overview of possible job profiles, employers - especially in an international context - and professional associations, internship opportunities, career entry, etc. Guest lectures by international experts or online participation in international meetings (also available as time-delayed streaming) are also planned.

Basic skills in translation with a focus on the two tracks , “Specialized Translation and the Language Industry” and “Translation in Literary-Art Media” (translation strategies, text type theory, language register, cultural premises, general and thematic knowledge, transcreation, revision, research skills, applied tools, software, etc.) are discussed using various texts. Specifics of the various translation fields with regard to the two tracks are illustrated with the help of targeted exercises.
The use of CAT tools, based on the VU “Translation Technologies and Language Industry Translation”, which is recommended to be attended in parallel according to the recommended study path, is illustrated by a project with MemoQ or any other CAT tool, if possible. Reflections on the meta-level (final portfolio) are also planned.

The didactic concept is based on the principle of multilingualism, so that, regardless of the languages chosen or to be chosen for the study course, all students' language skills can be taken into account within collaborative exercises during the lecture.

Assessment and permitted materials

Continuous control. The use of LLM-based tools is accepted for solving individual tasks during the semester. In this case, however, students must describe and document the work process and reflect on the benefits and problems of using these tools for solving the specific task.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

C2 level (CEFR) in all working languages

As with all pi courses at the ZTW, attendance is compulsory. Absences due to illness must be documented by a medical certificate. Justified absences are accepted up to 2 times.

The assessment is based on 4 assignments in order to reduce the individual work load and to give you more flexibility. Three of these are written and will be submitted via Moodle and corrected during the semester. The fourth one on 9.1.2025 is a joint practical exercise on MemoQ or any other tool in presence. Please save this date! All assignments are assessed with a maximum of 100 points.

Below is a list of these points and how they correspond to grades on the grading scale 1 to 5:

80 - 60 - gut
60 - 40 – befriedigend
40 - 20 - genügend
20 - 0 – nicht genügend
As these numbers have a wide range within a grade, there are intermediate grades when grading on Moodle.

The final grade 1 to 5 is calculated from all
partial performances, each of which accounts for 25% of the grade.

First, the total final grade is calculated by points. If the points system on Moodle results in an intermediate grade, it is rounded up or down. The observance of compulsory attendance and active participation in the course units are also taken into account.
