Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This class focuses on the intercultural transfer of German and English texts on various subject matters and from different cultures. The main skills taught are:
- Task analysis: text analysis, identifying discourse conventions, researching terminology, considering parameters for cultural transfer, communicating with clients etc.; source texts may be short, long or simply a clearly defined subject matter.
- Intercultural transfer: from German to English and from English to German, producing texts that meet the parameters of the purpose, target culture, target group, text type and medium specified; target texts to be written include various types of summaries, abstracts and translations.
- Description of the work process: analytical reflection on strategies, methods and results.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students' grades will reflect their performance on work done in class, homework assignments, contributions to discussions and a final exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will learn strategies for task-related intercultural text transfer: understanding the parameters of the target text specified, understanding the source text and its context, identifying and carrying out the research necessary to complete the task (questions, context, terminology etc.), and developing professional work habits (e.g. contacts with clients, colleagues, work methods).

Examination topics

Source texts may be provided in advance or ad hoc, discussed in detail during class or assigned for preparation (individually or in groups). The main issues and suitable strategies for intercultural transfer will be discussed in class for each source text. Target texts are to be written as homework, as teamwork in class or individually in class.
