Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course will focus on so-called RETROTERMS in the American context. These are (often amusing) words or phrases that have appeared in the course of time and have survived to this day so that they are still part of today's language. Retroterms mean very little to the non-American speaker if he/she is not familiar with a given period in which these words and phrases emerged. Furthermore, terms can mean different things to a number of generations. We will explore the origins of selected terms, their cultural references and how they are still used in different contexts today.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance and participation are mandatory for a grade. Completion of al assignments is also a prerequisite.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Goal of this course is to sensitive the class to the cultural references of American words and phrases. New terms are to be learned in context.
