Aims, contents and method of the course

The purpose of the present course is to contribute to the development English language proficiency and translation proficiency.

At the end of the course, students should be able
- to define and illustrate the main (linguistic and non-linguistic) features of registers and genres;
- to identify genre stages;
- to identify collocations and lexical templates;
- to identify technical terms and register/genre-specific expressions in texts;
- to identify relevant assumptions that underlie specific text types and audience expectations;
- to implement acquired skills in the production of idiomatic and register/genre-compliant texts.

Methods:
- text analysis;
- semantic and syntactic analysis;
- text production tasks;
- corpus linguistics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Two tests (one mid-term and one end-of-term); homework assignments; regular class attendance.
Students will be allowed to use dictionaries, corpora and other electronic resources in homework assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students are required to attend classes regularly and to maintain an 85% attendance rate.

Examination topics

Will be discussed in class.
