Aims, contents and method of the course

Political, cultural, ethical and communicative implications of the use of English as a lingua franca.
Guidelines for non-discriminatory, culturally integrative use and acceptance of English in the international community.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam (multiple choice) at the end of the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Creating awareness for the pragmatic and ethical dimensions of global English.

Increasing participants' confidence in using English in a global context.

Increasing awareness of participants' own communicative role in international communication situations.

Examination topics

Discussion of the global dimension of English based on written texts and face-to-face communication.

Discussion of different varieties and forms of English in the context of the prevailing socio-politcal hierarchy and their linguistic status.
