Aims, contents and method of the course

Exploration of English as a global lingua franca in various fields such as business, science, and diplomacy; historical development; varieties of English; the role of economic and political power; global culture and cultural identity; the pros and cons of having a global language; challenges of lingua franca communication.

Assessment and permitted materials

End-of-semester exam (multiple choice); exam in English.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To introduce students to important concepts regarding lingua franca communication and English as a global language; to raise students’ awareness of the importance of being able to apply English as a lingua franca; to highlight special issues that might arise when using English as a lingua franca; to accustom students to listening to theoretical concepts and practical examples in English.

Examination topics

Lecture and presentation of contents; real-life examples (listening and reading examples, dialogues, situations); discussion of contents and examples. Course held in English.
