Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals:
After completion of this course students should be able
- to compile relevant text corpora (legal texts)
- to carry out contrastive text analyses
- to critically assess different translation solutions
- to discuss the relevance of different translation theories and methodological issues linked to the translation
- to apply their theoretical and methodological knowledge as well as the results of their research in the translation of specialist texts

Content:
Practice-relevant translation assignments for different purposes and audience; contrastive text and genre analyses; application of translation theories and terminology; discussion of relevant theoretical issues; compilation of comparable corpora; contrastive analyses of the justice systems of Austria and Spain.
Analysis of legal language and terminology (spanish and german); discussion of relevant theoretical issues

Methods:
Oral presentations, discussions, group work, home work.

Assessment and permitted materials

Continuous assessment, group work, home and class assignments (written translations) project work or written examination at the end of semester. Participation on discussions in the class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Compulsory attendance is required. (Max. 2 absences tolerated)

At least 60 points are required for a positive note.
1 (sehr gut): 100-90 points
2 (gut): 89 - 81 points
3 (befriedigend): 80 - 71 points
4 (genügend): 70-60 points
5 (nicht genügend): 59 - 0 points

Examination topics

All contents presented and discussed in the classes, specially all contents based on reflexion considerating translatological criteria and on suggestions commented in the classes. Additional information available in the moodle course.
