Aims, contents and method of the course

Building on basic interpreting skills as acquired in the BA curriculum in courses such as "Einführung ins Übersetzen und Dolmetschen" (Introduction to Translating and Interpreting), including an introduction to note-taking for consecutive interpreting, this class introduces students to the basic modes of interpreting, including note-based consecutive, sight translation, dialogue interpreting and simultaneous interpreting (including whispered interpreting); interpreting is practiced in various language combinations based on narrative, expository and argumentative speeches produced by participants.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment based on attendance and active participation (interpreting, but also by presenting source-speech material and simulated dialoguic interactions.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Acquisition of basic interpreting skills with an introduction on all different working modes.

Examination topics

Language-pair-based interpreting exercises (for students of all languages, but with a focus on English and Romance languages); simulation of various interpreter-mediated interaction situations.

Reading list

Readings will be recommended during the course as needed.
