Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This exercise builds on the basic interpreting skills taught in the Consecutive Interpreting I course.

COURSE AIMS:
Students will strengthen their skills in consecutive interpreting from English into German and vice versa, improve their note-taking technique and consolidate their ability to work under time pressure and to speak in public.

CONTENTS:
- Analysing source texts (content and rhetoric)
- Analysis of settings (monologue and dialogue conference scenarios, press conferences, speeches, discussions, etc.)
- Improving note-taking techniques (developing your own symbols, analysing the strengths and weaknesses of your own note-taking technique, developing solutions individually and in groups).
- Giving and accepting feedback and using it in a constructive manner
- Developing specialised terminology, improving vocabulary in both working languages

METHOD:
- Interpreting in authentic and realistic settings (presentations, simulated panel discussions in class)
- Developing and strengthening interpreting strategies through practice and follow-up work
- Dealing with numbers and proper names in consecutive interpreting - terminology research (specialist topics)
- Presentation technique (focus on linguistic expression, fluency, body language)
- Self-evaluation and peer evaluation based on quality criteria (see assessment grid for the module examination)
consecutive interpreting of different types of speech (monologue and dialogue)
from authentic interpreting situations).
