Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This semester we will focus on AMERICAN FILM and how it relates to American society and culture. We will first explore how US history (slavery, Civil War, Vietnam War) is reflected in film (silent film; war films, westerns). Another focus will be Hollywood (the Golden Age; the star system; the demise of the studio system). We will examine different genres of US film (film noir, western, avantgarde film...) to trace social changes in the 20th century. There will also be some discussion of film-specific terminology throughout the semester.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation, completion of all reading and viewing assignments, a notebook to be handed in at the end of the semester.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
One main goal of this class will be to provide students an overview of American film on the basis of which they will be better ableto analyze/interpret film material and recognize references to US society and culture.
Examination topics
The class will require regular participation. There will be reading and viewing assignments and discussions in class.
