Aims, contents and method of the course

Thema/Arbeitsgrundlage dieses Proseminars zur amerikanischen Kultur sind 25 literarische Werke, welche die kulturelle Identität Amerikas entscheidend geprägt habe, darunter so bekannte Klassiker wie Moby Dick, The Great Gatsby, On the Road, The Maltese Falcon. Anhand von längeren Auszügen aus diesen Werken und der Sekundärliteratur soll reflektiert und diskutiert werden, wie diese Werke nicht nur die Kultur der Vereinigten Staaten, sondern auch die (Selbst)Wahrnehmung der Amerikaner beeinflusst haben.

Assessment and permitted materials

Zwei Tests (mid-term and final test) und eine mündliche Präsentation.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Ziel des Proseminars ist ein vertieftes, differenziertes Verständnis des amerikanischen Kulturlebens anhand ausgewählter literarischer Werke und deren Rezeption.

Examination topics

Regelmäßige Teilnahme. Voraussetzung ist auch die aktive Mitarbeit.
