Aims, contents and method of the course

The course provides a practical corpus-based introduction to translation and contributes to the development of translation proficiency.

At the end of the course, students should be able
- to identify semantic and pragmatic features of corresponding expressions in L1 and L2;
- to describe situational and register-related features of the source and target text;
- to explore, compare and evaluate translation correspondences in parallel corpora;
- to identify technical terms in texts and generate glossaries.
- to apply acquired knowledge and skills to translation tasks.

Methods:
- corpus linguistic techniques;
- translation exercises;
- think aloud protocols.

Assessment and permitted materials

Two tests (one mid-term and one end-of-term); homework assignments; regular class attendance.
Students will be allowed to use dictionaries, corpora and other electronic resources in homework assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students are required to attend classes regularly and to maintain an 85% attendance rate.
