Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This master colloquium is primarily provided for students of the master's program Multilingual Technologies, but is open to students of the specialization technical translation and language industry. The use of gender-fair language is a prerequisite for this colloquium and any following master's thesis. The chosen topic of your master's thesis has to be coordinated with the lecturer prior to the start of this colloquium.

The objectives of this colloquium are to specify and refine your already selected master's thesis topic, draft a detailed research design and plan for writing a master's thesis, and brush up on scientific methods and standards. At the end of the colloquium, each student should have a clear idea and plan on how to proceed with and write their master's thesis.

To this end, the colloquium initially alternates theoretical contents with practical exercises. The majority of the colloquium will focus on student presentations on the individual topics, their discussion and refinement. Active participation in the discussions is strongly encouraged.

Further requirements:
Subsequent to the submission of the supervision agreement, you are expected to continuously work on your master's thesis and complete it within 6 months. Exceptions to this timeline have to be discussed personally with your potential supervisor.

The supervisor reserves the right to withdraw the agreement to supervise a master's thesis, if no obvious effort to work on the master's thesis is evident within the first 9 months.

Assessment and permitted materials

Performance will be measured based on three activities:
1) oral presentation of the main concept of your master's thesis,
2) submission of the written research proposal or first theoretical chapters of the master's thesis no later than one month after the oral presentation,
3) active participation and compliance with attendance requirements

Active participation not only in exercises but also discussions in class and feedback on each other's presentations are explicitly encouraged.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Oral presentation and written research proposal/first theoretical chapters of sufficient quality for a positive assessment; the research proposals have to comply with all required contents.

Attendance is mandatory and only two lectures of 90 minutes may be missed, which in case of this blocked lecture means at maximum one day may be missed.

One criterion for a positive evaluation is compliance with the guidelines for scientific writing of Pöchhacker, Rogl and Risku 2021: see https://transvienna.univie.ac.at/fileadmin/user_upload/z_translationswiss/Studium/Wissenschaftliches_Arbeiten/Richtlinien_2021.pdf

Examination topics

Presentation: slides have to be uploaded on Moodle until 10:00 am on the day of your presentation
Research proposal/theoretical chapters: to be submitted the latest one month following the individual oral presentation.
