Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Communicative behavior in conversations and discussions: development of means of verbal expression and presentation norms, also with regard to argumentative techniques and non-verbal communication. Discussion and moderation. Practice-oriented production of oral texts for diverse groups and communicative situations (presentations, speeches, interviews etc.)
Assessment and permitted materials
Immanent course grading: grade based on the semester performance. Regular attendance is prerequisite for assessing the students performance. Continuous active in-class participation and oral exams during the semester as well as an oral final exam in the last week of the semester. There will be an attendance list in this course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Improvement of oral communication and expression skills as well as of rhetorical skills, broadening lexical knowledge and communicative skills (pronunciation, intonation, speed), use of verbal and non-verbal communicative elements, achievement of a general oral communicative competence, which should be used in ways appropriate to a situation. Oral communication and oral text competence based on simple to medium-difficult texts of various genres from Spanish-speaking countries. By considering various topics, the course offers the possibility to draw cultural, idiomatic, and lexical comparisons.
Examination topics
Teaching the basics in rhetoric. In the context of concrete communicative situations (presentations, group discussions, free speech on various topics, introductions, information sessions, interviews etc.) there will be simulated tasks taking into consideration target audience, text genre, questions of style and rhetoric, as well as non-verbal communicative elements. Independent single and group work (also blended learning) serves as a preparation for students’ oral presentation and subsequent discussion in class. (Audio- and video-taping included.) Hand-in of a glossary at the end of the semester.
