Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Introduction to basic aspects of translation; text and assignment analysis for translation (purpose, target group, cultural context, text conventions, text functions, etc.); production of German texts based on English source texts (E-G) and vice versa (G-E), reflecting on decisions made during the translation process.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assignment will be based on the following:
- Participation in class (10%) and in online activities
- Two tests (30% each)
- Completion of written assignment(s) (30%)
Attendance mandatory (two absences allowed.) Students are allowed to use mono- and bilingual dictionary in exams; one of the two exams may be written on the laptop (internet allowed).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objectives of this course are as follows:
- to understand translation as an act of text production for a specific purpose and target group,
- to learn to analyze a source text in a specific environment,
- to learn to identify requirements a target text has to fulfill based on the assignment,
- to develop research competences,
- to learn to reflect on as well as evaluate and optimize the target texts produced.

Examination topics

Translation assignments are to be completed in class or prepared at home; students work in small groups or individually. Competences and expertise are developed through discussions, presentations, peer-to-peer feedback, assignments to be completed on the Moodle platform, etc.
