Aims, contents and method of the course

The key to successful writing is knowing your target audience, understanding the conventions of a given genre and having a clearly defined communicative purpose.

By completing this course, students will be able to:
1.) adapt texts for different communicative situations;
2.) produce texts that fulfil the expectations of the brief;
3.) craft texts that are syntactically and grammatically correct; and
4.) refine their reading comprehension and text production skills.

Didactic approach:
The course will be structured around in-class reading and writing activities to be completed individually, as well as in pairs and groups. The results of the writing activities will be discussed in class, during which peer review will be encouraged. The homework assignments will focus on improving text organisation, grammar and style.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final grade is composed of the following:
- Active participation: 20%
- Homework assignments: 20%
- Mid-term test: 30%
- Final test: 30%

Students must complete all assignments.

Grading scale:
90-100%: 1 (Excellent)
80-89%: 2 (Good)
70-79%: 3 (Satisfactory)
60-69%: 4 (Sufficient)
< 60%: 5 (Fail)

The use of Artificial Intelligence via tools such as ChatGPT is strictly prohibited, unless otherwise specified.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Advanced knowledge of oral and written English is required.

Attendance is mandatory. Two absences are allowed.

Examination topics

The tests will be based on the in-class writing activities and homework assignments.
