Aims, contents and method of the course

Grammar?
"[T]he knowledge people have about how to arrange language in patterns, [...] the things people do when they put words together." (de Beaugrande 2007)
“The only evidence we have of what makes up the English language is how people write and speak it. If an ‘incorrect’ form is more widely understood than an alternative construction, it isn’t incorrect. It’s what the language is.” (Kamm 2015)
Many people are passionate about language. And so are you. The purpose of this grammar class is to offer advice on usage, and I hope it does so entertainingly and reliably.
On this term's menu?
Tenses and aspects, conditionals, modals, stative and dynamic verbs, the passive, reported speech, gerunds & infinitives, linking words, relative clauses, punctuation, adjectives and adverbs, idioms and expressions, 'not-so-close' friends (language transfer), similar-looking-words and shades of meaning, and ... a free wish.
In-class exercises and homework assignments (Moodle).
Individual work.

Assessment and permitted materials

Mid-term test (40%)
End-of-term test (40%)
Two mini tests (10% each)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students must complete all assignments and attend at least 10 of the 12 lessons.
Grading: 90% 1/80% 2/70% 3/60% 4/59% 5 (fail).
