Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to become aware of different types of texts and their requirements with special attention given to various text functions and types, media, target groups, writing processes, revision and argumentation. Furthermore, students should be able to improve and further develop their comprehension, writing, speaking and presentation skills.
To achieve these objectives, we will work with different types of texts (written, audio and audiovisual), formats and genres in reading and listening activities, writing assignments and presentations. Assignments will be prepared individually and in groups, completed at home and presented in class.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment will be based on the following:
- 1 mid-term test (30%)
- 1 end-of-term test (30%)
- Written and oral assignments (20%)
- Participation in class (20%)
60% of the above are required for a passing grade at the end of the semester.

No materials or electronic devices are permitted for the tests.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

An advanced level of both oral and written English is required.
Students must complete all assignments.
Regular attendance is mandatory – two absences allowed.
Grading scale: 90-100%: 1. // 80-89%: 2 // 70-79%: 3 // 60-69%: 4 // < 60%: 5 (fail)

Examination topics

It is expected that students can apply the theoretical input, as well as methods and strategies discussed in class to new assignments, text types and genres.
