Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
- Getting to know selected terminological, semantic and grammatical peculiarities of business English
- Getting to know different types of business texts
- Reflecting on the meaning of economic terms and on their use in different contexts
- Contrastive comparison of US and UK economic terminology
- Practising collocations typical of English business language
Contents: Preparation of texts of different types from different economic sectors
Method: Group work, discussion, home assignments, presentation.
The detailed exercise programme will be presented at the beginning of the semester and will be accessible via the learning platform Moodle.

Assessment and permitted materials

Type of performance assessment and permitted aids:
- Two written exams, home assignments, presentations, oral participation
- Non-electronic dictionaries, scripts, notes

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
- Compulsory attendance, students may be absent twice without excuse
- Passing of at least two written exams, all home assignments, oral participation
- The presentation is compulsory.
Assessment criteria:
- Presentation: 30 points
- Two written exams: 25 points (each)
- Participation in the discussion rounds: 20 points
60 points are required for a positive assessment of the course.
1 (excellent) 100-90 points
2 (good) 89-81 points
3 (satisfactory) 80-71 points
4 (marginal) 70-60 points
5 (poor) 0-59 points
