Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Introduction to interpreting techniques, gradual development of interpreting skills, introduction to topic-specific research skills, continuous vocabulary expansion through the creation of glossaries and word lists, development of interpreting strategies (anticipation, analytical skills and ‘time lag’).

Introduction to quality criteria for interpreting services such as coherence, completeness and prosody, reference to voice training
Contents: Interpreting simple to moderately difficult speeches and lectures, initially shorter passages, increasing the speaker's speed and the duration of the interpreted passages over the course of the semester. Balanced mix of German and Russian speeches.
Method: Introduction to the various techniques for getting started in simultaneous interpreting (shadowing, etc.)
Feedback on individual interpreting performances, peer-to-peer feedback, students are encouraged to record their interpretations and then analyse them critically.
Self- and peer-evaluation based on quality criteria that are explained in detail.
Initial exercises for the first unit(s) (cognitive shadowing, simultaneous
paraphrasing and sight interpreting (individually in the booth or in a
group))
Simultaneous interpreting in the booth
Repeated interpreting of the same text in the booth with the aim of integrating feedback
into the interpreting
Feedback from the teacher
Transcription and analysis of own interpreting performances, possibly with peer feedback
Preparation and research at home

Assessment and permitted materials

The course is assessed through continuous assessment. All oral and written work in face-to-face classes, homework and platform work are included in the assessment.
Attendance is compulsory. Participation in class is an essential part of the assessment.
Several partial assessments, the majority of which are interpreting performances.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance and active participation
Learning basic interpreting skills
Conscientious completion of tasks on the learning platform
Weekly completion of the required interpreting assignments
Self-analysis of interpretations (selected recordings are analysed in detail)
The grade is composed as follows:
Weekly interpreting assignments (at least 7): 70%
Homework and active participation in the units: 30%
For a positive semester grade, more than half of the assignments must be graded positively.

91-100% : 1
81-90% : 2
71-80% : 3
61-70% : 4

Examination topics

Performance will be assessed continuously in each exercise. Overall performance will be assessed at the end of the course. In the middle and at the end of the semester, a video will be interpreted into Russian and German. This performance will be used to determine the final grade.
