Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is a four-semester lecture seris (1-Humanities, 2-Natural Sciences and Medicine, 3-Technology, 4-Law and Economics). The winter term of 2010 will be devoted to Part 3 - Technology. The lectures seek to provide an insight into the terminology of selected fields and contexts, special purpose text types and their conventions, principles of technical communication and research options.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written end-of-term test (no use of other resources than paper and pen, no dictionaries, no Internet access) to check students' knowledge of vocabulary, synonyms and definitions as well as technical terminology in context (summaries and brief translations German-English, English-German)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic special purpose terminology in selected fields, development of strategies to improve students' word power, research skills and the ability to produce and understand technical texts

Examination topics

"Chalk and talk" alternating with interactive discussion of English texts, sources, research examples. The main language of tuition is English, juxtaposed with German
