Aims, contents and method of the course

The course deals with the special terminology of selected fields and its contexts, special purpose texts types and their conventions, principles of technical communmication and research options. Students should acquire basic special terminology and background knowledge in selected fields, develop strategies to improve their word power, enhance their research skills and refine their ability to understand and produce technical texts."Chalk and talk" alternating with interactive discussion of English texts, sources, research examples. The main language of tuition is English, juxtaposed with German.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written end-of-term test (no use of resources other than paper and pen allowed) to check students' knowledge of basic technical vocabulary and terminology in context - summary in German and production of short texts in English on the basis of texts in the respective other language.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum number of points for pass: 40
Points system: 1 point per correct answer in the vocabulary section (max. 14-18 points), 1 point deducted from maximum points in the summary/text production section for each mistake, 0.5 point deduction for punctuation errors (max. points 30 / 15 /15).
