Aims, contents and method of the course
Goals: Developing awareness of current global(ised) English(es) and the linguistic, socio-political realities they entail. Finding your own voice in English in personal and professional communication. Learning to act responsibly in international and/or translingual communication settings.Contents: In this course, we will critically examine assumptions about the English language(s) and discuss its role as lingua franca in transcultural communication, including practical applications.Methods: Group discussions, reading and discussing academic texts on the topic, presentations and written assignmentsPlease note that the course will be held in English.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation in class as well as written assignments. Weekly assignments will be discussed in class.This is a ‘prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung’ (continuous assessment) which means that your attendance is required (max. 2 missed sessions allowed).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum requirements: actively participate, contribute to discussions and hand in written assignmentsYou will be awarded points based on your participation in class (maximum 30), your completed assignments (maximum 30) and your ability to demonstrate critical reflection on the topics discussed in class (maximum 40). For a passing grade, you need at least 60 points out of a maximum of 100 points.Grading scale:
90-100 points: Sehr Gut (1) – pass
80-89 points: Gut (2) – pass
70-79 points: Befriedigend (3) – pass
60-69 points: Genügend (4) – pass
0-59 points: Nicht Genügend (5) – fail
90-100 points: Sehr Gut (1) – pass
80-89 points: Gut (2) – pass
70-79 points: Befriedigend (3) – pass

Examination topics
This is a ‘prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung’ (continuous assessment) so there is no separate exam. All topics discussed during class as well as the selected literature are relevant for the assignments and participation.
