Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
After successfully completing this module, students will be able to translate specialised legal texts appropriately and justify their translation decisions on the basis of theory. They will develop the ability to use the appropriate research tools and translation technologies. They acquire the necessary translation strategy and evaluation skills for a high-quality translation as well as the metacommunicative skills for successful communication with clients.

Contents:
In this course, students deal with the translation of highly specialised legal texts. In various subject areas (family law, criminal law, contracts, deeds, etc.), different types of texts are translated into both language directions.
During the translation process, students deepen their research skills and their expertise in the area of structured terminology work. Best practice models of translation processes, which include the revision of the translation as an important element, are discussed. Integration of CAT tools, AI and pre- and post-editing in the course.

Methodology
- Discussion in class of problems that students have encountered during the translation process
- Discussion of the source texts in class - analysing the source text with regard to the terminological challenges.
- Translation strategy, suitable parallel texts, specialised background.
- Thematisation of translation strategies including research options.
- Practical project work (from enquiry to delivery, including communication with fictitious clients in group or individual work)
- A CAT tool can be used in the exercises.
- Discussion of the submitted translations and revisions.
- Discussion of the terminology documentation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Two tests (one per language direction) in the classroom and one homework exercise

- Work is done in both language directions in all courses.
- No distinction is made in the assessment between students' active and passive foreign languages.
- AI and other CAT tools are permitted in the courses. The use of AI is not permitted in examinations, tests and homework. If the use of AI and other unauthorised tools is suspected, a grade-relevant examination interview may be conducted after a test, homework or examination has been taken.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Compulsory attendance, students are allowed two unexcused absences.
60 points are required for a positive assessment of the course.
1 (very good): 100 - 90 points
2 (good): 89 - 80 points
3 (satisfactory): 79 - 70 points
4 (sufficient): 69 - 60 points
5 (insufficient): 59 - 0 points

Examination topics
