Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Reflection upon the process of stereotype construction and establishment within the Brazilian Culture as portrayed in the Brazilian sitcoms “Os Normais” and “A Grande Família”. Analysis of their “extratextual” references, including vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. In addition to that, reflection upon the adaptation of Machado de Assis’ novel Dom Casmurro into the TV series entitled “Capitu”. Finally, analysis of news stories and documentaries on various topics (yet to be chosen).

Assessment and permitted materials

- Short essays/summaries;
- Classroom exercises;
- Oral presentations;
- Attendance and class participation;
- Participation in Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Improve students’ listening ability, ranging from a more colloquial register to a more formal, archaic register;
- Expand their knowledge of Brazilian culture and stereotypes;
- Expand their active knowledge of idiomatic expressions, as well as of specialised vocabulary (yet to be chosen);
- Improve their writing, elocution and translation skills.

Examination topics

Our classes will consist of 30-40 min. (or longer) videos, either followed of preceded by the presentation or discussion of the topics, vocabulary and cultural references in question. The reading of texts will provide a solid basis for our discussions, and students will be asked to write different kinds of texts/exercises based on the videos.
