Aims, contents and method of the course

OBJECTIVES
- To acquire basic interpreting skills in the language pair Russian-German
- Raising awareness of the quality criteria of interpreting services
- Memory skills: training with regard to interpreting
- Self-assessment: identifying one's own weaknesses and strengths and trying to optimize one's performance accordingly
- Feedback: practice giving and receiving feedback to colleagues; verbalize and argue one's own impression as a listener.
- Stress resistance: find individual ways to deal with stress in interpreting situations.
- Basics of note-taking techniques for consecutive interpreting.
CONTENTS
Trying out different modes and ways of working:
- Short consecutive interpreting sequences (Russian - German and vice versa)
- sight-on interpreting
- chuchotage (interpreting by whispering to the client)
- Relay interpreting (if the language combination of the participants is suitable)
- Memory exercises (with more or less notation)
- Getting to know different subject areas and contexts (research as preparation for interpreting assignments)
METHODS
- Working with texts (videos and speeches), with and without preparation
- Consecutive interpreting with subsequent discussion in the group or in small groups
- Terminology and vocabulary work through given and freely chosen topics (creating and giving short presentations)
- Development of oral expression skills in both working languages (Russian and German)

Assessment and permitted materials

- Attendance and active participation in class
- For a positive overall grade, the required assignments must be completed
- The semester grade is based on the work performed during the semester.
- No final exam, as this is an exam-immanent course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

60 points out of 100 to be achieved = minimum number of points to pass.
50P - performance in class
30P - assignments (no assignment=points deducted)

Examination topics

Active participation in class and completion of the required parts of the course; no final exam, as this is an exam-immanent course.
