Aims, contents and method of the course

Content:
Analysis and discussion of authentic texts; introduction of theoretical concepts; production of original texts of various types based on specific instructions; creative writing tasks (rewriting and paraphrasing of texts). Text types to be discussed include procedural texts, newsletters, letters, newspaper articles and columns, narrative texts, reports and press releases.

Objectives:
On completion of the course, students will have learned how to identify text types and their features and how to produce effective original texts. The course also aims to improve students' writing skills and to raise their awareness of textual features and patterns.

Methods:
Lectures, in-class discussions and interactive activities; writing tasks and home assignments based on specific instructions (e.g. producing original written texts of various types, rewriting/adapting and paraphrasing texts to suit different communicative purposes and target groups); individual, pair, and group work

Assessment and permitted materials

Completion of (written) assignments (20%), mid-term test (40%); end-term test (40%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students need 60% of the total 100 percentage points to pass the course.
