Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This module aims to introduce students to audiovisual translation, media accessibility and relevant technologies. It offers an overview of main audiovisual translation practices, and hands-on practice and guidance on interlingual subtitling and monolingual subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, as well audio description. Using dedicated technology, the students will have an overview of the audiovisual translation market, and the opportunity of familiarising themselves with relevant software while undertaking practical exercises with selected media resources.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- describe the specific nature of audiovisual translation and media accessibility, in particular the way in which sound, image and subtitles work together;
- display awareness of the linguistic, cultural, professional and political issues involved in these fields;
- display awareness of the constraints involved in interlingual and monolingual subtitling, as well as audio description;
- demonstrate specific hands-on audio description and subtitling skills e.g. text compression, spotting/cueing, chunking ;
- conform to and apply conventions of good practice;
- make informed choices on the basis of genre, purpose, and intended audience;
