Aims, contents and method of the course

- This course will be taught in person in the ZTW computer lab, without a hybrid or online option -

This module aims to introduce students to audiovisual translation, media accessibility and relevant technologies. It offers an overview of main audiovisual translation practices, and hands-on practice and guidance on topics such as interlingual subtitling, monolingual subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or audio description. Using dedicated technology, the students will have an overview of the audiovisual translation market, and the opportunity of familiarising themselves with relevant tools while undertaking practical exercises with selected media resources.

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- describe the specific nature of audiovisual translation and media accessibility, in particular the way in which sound, image and linguistic components work together;
- display awareness of the linguistic, cultural and professional issues in these fields;
- demonstrate specific hands-on AVT skills, for example text compression, spotting and editing;
- conform to and apply conventions of good practice;
- make informed choices on the basis of genre, purpose, and intended audience;
- use relevant tools individually or in teams to complete tasks respecting a given brief;
- orient themselves in the specific research literature.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is mandatory—two absences allowed.
A good level of English is required.
Students must complete all assignments.

In order to pass this module, a student needs to reach the threshold of 4.
