Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Reflection upon topics which, in turn, are relevant to the craft of the translator, i.e. the notion of fidelity, what makes a good translation, translation strategies, the notion of equivalence, amonst others.
Overview of Translation Studies in Brazil, particularly of the reception of Brazilian theories by the international comunity, as well as the relationships between these theories and other consolidated theories from various countries.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Short essays;
- One final, longer essay;
- One oral presentation;
- Attendance and class participation.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Expand theoretical knowledge about reading, writing and interpretation practices in general (including translation practice);
- Improve writing/translation techinques;
- Make the terminology and style of cientific texts of our area more familiar.

Examination topics

We will read a number of scientific texts both in German and Portuguese and then do translation exercises, as well as write critical essays on such texts.
