Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims according to the curriculum:
- Knowledge of the criteria of scientific methods and demonstration of this knowledge by working on specific questions from the fields of sports scientific theory and practice
- Knowledge of the basic concepts of scientific theory and their significance for scientific research
- Knowledge of research strategies and the use of relevant literature
- Basic knowledge of hermeneutics and empiricism and conventions of academic discourse
- Writing texts based on scientific criteria and creating presentations on relevant sports science issues

Contents and methods of the course:
Students will receive an introduction to the above-mentioned topics and will work independently on a question using the acquired knowledge. The course includes theoretical input from the lecturer, active participation phases by the students and independent work on content outside of the classroom units. The course is always held on-site in person, unless otherwise communicated.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course includes the following assessment components:
- There will be 3 homework assignments to be completed and handed in individually by the students.
- An exposé must be prepared and submitted in which a research question and the methods to be used to answer it are presented. This is an individual task and must be completed independently.
- Peer feedback has to be provided on another person's exposé.
- A short presentation on the research topic must be given within a small group.
- At the end of the semester, an individual seminar paper must be submitted in which the processing of the research question and its results are presented and discussed. The IMRaD structure and the principles of scientific work taught have to be followed.

The following applies to all submissions: The use of AI to create texts is considered an unauthorized assistance.

All coursework must be completed by students by the following 31.03. at the latest for courses with continuous assessment in the winter semester, and by the following 31.10. at the latest for courses with continuous assessment in the summer semester. All students who have been allocated a place on a course must be assessed unless they have deregistered by the deadline or can credibly demonstrate an important reason for dropping the course. (§ 10 para. 6 of the statutes of the University of Vienna). A course that has been assessed negatively must be repeated by completing it again. A commissioned assessment is not permitted. (§ 10 para. 7 study law part of the statutes)

It is explicitly pointed out that if you are found to have cheated on a course (e.g: Copying, plagiarism, use of unauthorized assistance, fabrication, ghostwriting, etc.) the entire course will be assessed as cheated and will count as an attempt. (Entry in U:SPACE: X = not assessed).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to be assessed positively:
- all assessment components (3 homework assignments, exposé, peer feedback, presentation, seminar paper) must be handed in/completed before the respective deadlines
- the attendance requirement must be fulfilled: 75% attendance --> max. 2 missing classes
- at least 55% of the total points must be achieved

The following points are awarded per assessment components (100 points in total):
- Homework: 3 x 10 points = 30 points
- Exposé: 10 points
- Peer feedback: 5 points
- Presentation: 15 points
- Seminar paper: 40 points

Grades:
- Very good (1): 91-100 points
- Good (2): 80-90 points
- Satisfactory (3): 65-79 points
- Sufficient (4): 55-64 points
- Insufficient (5): 0-54 points
