Aims, contents and method of the course

Course content:
This course is designed to provide students with basic knowledge about the phenomena of ageing in today's society and how physical activity can influence it.
Students will get to know different ways of training, evaluation of function & range of motion as well as different physical activity programs for people in the second half of their life.
Different forms of endurance and coordination training as well as physical activity programs tailored to the needs of elderly people will be presented, tried out and discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment:
-assessment of function (group work)
- on-the-spot support in an outdoor-activity parc and interviewing elderly users (individual work)

Exam:
Upon agreement

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Objectives:
The course is designed to provide students with an overview of ageing theories, the image of the age, biology and sports medicine basics, target group specific principles of training as well as the status quo in research in the field of physical activity for the elderly.

Students shall get familiar with the range of motion and limitations of elderly people, as well as get to know the "Do' s and Dont' s" in interacting with the elderly.

Students will acquire skills in appropriate training methods as well as learn how to organize physical activity programs for different target groups (within the group of the elderly) from a methodic/didactic point of view.

They shall gain experience in the conception and implementation of exercise for the elderly in its full range and variety and be able to critically reflect

Examination topics

Methods of Instruction:
-theoretical input including videos showing physical activity for the elderly
-presentation of assessments to evaluate function & range of motion of elderly persons
-examples of focal topics
-introduction to and critical reflection of specialized literature (including practical examples)
