Aims, contents and method of the course

Bioethics covers not only a broad field of ethical reflection, but is also continuously devellopping further. This is due to technical innovation and national legislation processes, but also conditioned by respective religious and cultural frameworks. In this seminar, we will higlight a selection of recent bioethical discussoins in various countries: the U.S.A., Slowenia, Rumania, Austria, Germany and Slowakia, and discuss the factors that were predominantly influentious on the decisions that were taken.

Assessment and permitted materials

regular and active participance, written paper

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- knowledge of recent bioethical discussions in Austria and abroad
- ability to recognise and analyse factors and institutions that influence bioethical decisions
- knowledge of the plurality of decision making processes in bioethical questions

Examination topics

Discussion based on selected literature, preparation of short statements to stimulate discussion
