Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The question of how to achieve social justice is of central importance for (Christian) social ethics. However, many of the prevailing normative-theoretical approaches to answering this question show considerable deficits vis-à-vis the complexity of contemporary society. "A disconnection [of a theory of justice ] from social analysis, and thus a fixation on purely normative principles" (Honneth, 2008), is, according to Axel Honneth, even one of the greatest limitations of contemporary political philosophy. A theory of (social) justice cannot do without a critical reflection on social reality. Social ethics therefore requires an engagement with social theory.Based on a reading of Sally Haslanger's book "Resisting Reality. Social Construction and Social Criticism", the seminar aims to make current approaches of critical social philosophy fruitful for social ethics and to think them further. The joint analysis of Haslanger's social theory and social criticism should contribute to gaining new perspectives on the relationship between social justice, social reality and human thought/language and enable us to critically question our own conceptions of social justice.
