Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The Cours deals with "System and Methodology" based on the "Ethica more geometrico demonstrata" (1677) by Baruch de Espinoza (1632-1677). The key text of European Rationalism will be systematically worked through and interpreted in order to study from this master of scientific methodology the essence of what a scientific system is all about.
Assessment and permitted materials
The performance monitoring is done through: (1) on campus participation in group presentations; (2) on line reflection questions concerning the Introduction to European Rationalism and Spinozas position within (3) on campus eXam at the end of the Course
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Methodological aim is to analyze the systematic character of one of the most outstanding works of European intellectual history. The course shall address the foundations of scientific reasoning and make them useful for the scientific work. Clarity of design, precision in the terminology and logic of deductive reasoning draw the "Ethics" of Spinoza and from that respect, his work is unrivaled.
Examination topics
With the support of the eLearning Platform FRONTER (in the "blended learning" mode), first a historical overview of the humanities will be offered and the position of the thought of Spinoza and his work will be characterized (introduction). In a second step (based on students group presentations) the "Ethics" will be analyzed on their methodological (conceptual and argumentative) structure.
