Continuous assessment of course work

The course presents basic principles of scientific work and proceeds in three steps. In the first, epistemological, part, we discuss the critical-rationalist perspective relying on the falsification principle of conjectures and refutations. We then explore pitfalls of the falsificationist approach with respect to the inferences made from observations and introduce scientific paradigms and research programs. The first step is completed by a discussion of challenges to the critical rationalist perspective expressed by the interpretive paradigm. In the second, methodological, part, we elaborate on the conceptualization of phenomena, discuss the concept of causality and the principle of explanation with special focus on the macro-micro-macro model of social explanation. We round up this part with a discussion of the problem of aggregation in the social sciences. The third, practical, part, focuses on the measurement of concepts and on quality criteria of research. The course is concluded by presentations of research designs of participants based on the principles discussed in the course.
