Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Research design is a prominent topic not only in the preparation phases, but also throughout the research process. This might apply even more to ethnographic data gathering and analysis that is - compared to other forms of empirical research in the social sciences characterised by unpredictability and flexibility. Depending on the situations encountered in the field the bundle of ethnographic methods must constantly be adapted.
Therefore the seminar aims at working intensively together at developing but also adaptation of ethnographic access during the research. Besides systematic planning the application of different data gathering instruments, reflexivity, the development of openness and possibilities to use serendipity effects are central. For this reason, we will read selected texts and discuss them in regards to the projects of participants. During the course students should present their current research design and develop it further. Therefore, readings and topics will be determined jointly at the beginning of the term.
