Different methodological approaches are introduced, discussed and applied in class by means of exemplary group work and small research projects conducted by the participants (at best relating to students` doctoral thesis projects).
Special emphasis is put on text analytical methods and approaches to the analysis of visual material on the one hand, empirical research methods such as interviews and observation on the other.
The interdisciplinary perspective of the course drawing from political science, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, cultural studies and visual studies combines methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation such as
semi-structured and open interviews (expert interview, problem
focused interview, narrative interview) as well as focus groups,
(participant) observation.
qualitative content analysis,
critical discourse analysis,
analysis of visual representations such as images, video clips and
documentary films,
computer aided approaches to the analysis of textual and visual
material
