Aims, contents and method of the course

The Forschungslolloquium focuses on issues of research design such as theoretical framework, methodological approaches, research questions and hypotheses, data collection, analysis and interpretation.
The colloquium is intended for PhD students who wish to reflect on theoretical and methodological matters relating to their PhD projects. The aim is to support the progress of the individual doctoral research projects both in theoretical and methodological terms.

Assessment and permitted materials

> Write two reviews of journal articles, one relating to the theoretical frame of the (planned) dissertation, the other to the methodological approach(es): 20%
> Give an oral presentation of your dissertation project/ draft: 20%
> Provide written and oral comments on a colleague's PhD project (allocation tbd on 9 March): 20%
> Deliver a written paper based on the PhD thesis at the end of the semester (different types of final papers are welcomed: revised research design, draft chapter on theory, draft chapter on methodology, progress report, etc.): 40%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is designed as a stage for critical scientific debate. Participants are expected to play an active role and contribute substantially to the colloquium by introducing, presenting and discussing their research topics and design, and asking relevant questions. Furthermore, it is also required that students comment on their respective colleagues dissertation projects and provide constructive support.
Details will be discussed in the first meeting.
Presence is mandatory (max. 3 unexcused absences).
