Aims, contents and method of the course

Doctoral candidates in the social sciences are often confronted with the problem of having to locate an empirical case study within a theoretical framework. As experience shows, there is a danger that in these cases theory is reduced to a merely decorative status. In the same sense in which the goal of an empirical case study should not be to simply illustrate theory, a theoretical framework should not be understood as decoration for an empirical case study. The aim of this Kolloquium is to test out and discuss the tricky relation between the empirical and the theoretical. To achieve this, a “safe space” will be provided in which candidates will have the opportunity to freely discuss problems related to the research design of their projects.

Assessment and permitted materials

Vorbereitende schriftliche Darlegung des eigenen Projekts, wechselseitige Lektüre und Diskussion, wechselseitige Übernahme von Kommentaren (im Stil einer Disputation), Kurzreferate, Seminararbeit oder Reflexionspapier.

Zur Diskussion werden ExpertInnen hinzugeladen.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regelmäßige und aktive Teilnahme am Seminar.
Eine positive Beurteilung sowohl der mündlichen wie der schriftlichen Teilleistung ist Voraussetzung für einen positiven Abschluss des Seminars.
