Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course offers an introduction into issues of survey design. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the main challenges concerning the design and implementation surveys. The first half of the class deals with different approaches to sampling and different types survey modes (online, face-to-face and telephone). The second half of the class addresses questionnaire design, including the evaluation of existing surveys as well as formulating own questions. At the end of the course, students will be able to critique existing survey designs as well as take first steps in designing their own surveys. This course is aimed at students who want to make use of surveys in their dissertation but have so far not acquired the methodological skills to do so.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final grade is made up of:
- an application of survey design methods to a hypothetical research project (50%),
- a short empirical analysis project based on questionnaire pretesting (30%), and
- participation (20%).
